A Lexicon of Zulu Military Units
Keith I Smith
Pick up any book on Zulu history, and there are many from which to choose, and the reader will eventually be confronted by a Zulu word. As often as not, this word will be the name of a Zulu regiment.
The way in which the Zulu regiment, or ibutho to give it its correct name, was formed, named, lived and fought is very different from anything that we may have experienced in the Western world.
The reader may also come across, during that same reading, a number of non-military words taken from the Zulu language and unless the writer of that book was sufficiently considerate as to provide a glossary of the words, the reader will simply not know what it means.
This short work, therefore, is the writer’s attempt to make sense of these matters, and to communicate his own research to others who may be interested. Softback, 54 pages.
